WHAT IS IT THAT EMPLOYERS WANT TO HEAR?
By Ernest John Proctor
One of the most often asked questions by someone going to an interview, is what is it they would like to hear, and how can I best answer their questions. Before, you answer a questions, think about the answer in the concept of C. A. R. where C represents CONTEXT, where A represents ACTION, and where R represents RESULTS.
In context, ask yourself the question “ What is the situation and what is my role?’
In action, ask yourself, “ What did I PERSONALLY do?”
In results, ask yourself “ What is the specific or measurable result?”
In the following example, I will outline the situation and my role in bold lettering, I will outline the actions in Italic print, and I will underline the measurable results.
When I was at school, I was president of the student council, and under my leadership, I asked the student body to raise funds for the orphaned children in our community. We sponsored a marathon race, had a bake sale, and ran a lottery. With these three functions, we raised over 10 million dong which was used to improve the facility and the quality of their food. I organized the event and was the treasurer. I brought all of the student leaders, to the presentation at the orphanage, so that they all could feel the personal satisfaction of doing something for the needy children. The teachers at our school were very proud of us and presented us with medallions at a school ceremony.
Not every applicant has outstanding answers for every question, but even some small accomplishments can be made meaningful by the proper presentation.
